The Libyan Democrats Society Press Release

We have learned that the Libyan cultural attache in London Mr Beleed El-Meshri armed with an iron bar verbally abused, pushed and shoved Mr Ashour al-Shamis. The incident took place inside The School of Oriental & African Studies in the University of London in the presence of the new Libyan ambassador to the United Kingdom Mr Mohammed Abul-Qasim Al-Zwai, officials, academics and members of media.

We consider this action is an attack on civil liberty, freedom of speech and civil values treble action by a government official who either not learned or can grasp the code of conduct for diplomats and proves to us that the revolutionary committees still very much in control of the selection for diplomatic positions.

We have been informed that the ambassador decided to relieve Mr Bleed El Meshri from his duties and ordered him to return to Libya.

We take this opportunity to point out to Mr Mohammed Abul-Qasim Al-Zwai; this behaviour from one of your officials is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Violation of The Libyan Democrats Society Charter [Article 3]

3. It is important for people to be able to discuss the issues that matter to them without fear of repression or retaliation. People need to be able to openly express their opinion.
