Gaddafi’s Attacks on Tripoli Continue

Reports from Our Capital Tripoli say that Gaddafi has ordered the destruction of close to half of the shops in the Tuesday Market. This order came after Gaddafi was upset that the shops were closed during a visit he made to the shop. The shopkeepers chose to attend a soccer match between the two leading teams in the country (al-Ahli) and (al-Ittihad).

Is his efforts to appear the man of the people, arrangements were made to visit several places in the Capital. After the disappointing response by the people of Tripoli, he ordered the destruction of all the shops that were closed. He further changed the venue of the September 1st celebration from Tripoli to Benghazi where he had a better reception it seems.

As it is known to all of us, Gaddafi has always considered Tripoli and its people as the enemy for the people of the city never gave him the support he sought. He made sure that all new housing projects as well as the confiscated homes were given to people from the interior of Libya. Water supplies were destroyed or simply turned off. Trash removal was made illegal, the seat of government was moved to the Eastern city of Sirte, major companies offices moved to other cities, and all citizens of the city have to travel to Sirte to get the simplest of the government services, licenses, etc. It is the government that owned your money, you wait forever and travel to Sirte countless times.

Unemployment has reached astronomical levels, telephone service is sporadic, and cost of living is many folds that of the income level. Young men can not get married for the prohibitive cost of housing and the lack of it. The security apparatus, however, is everywhere in the city and young men and women are jailed routinely. At the Tripoli International, you are met by over 10 security agencies and may have to answer to all.
