The problem in Libya is far more than just political

This letter is in response to the Leeby [Lebe] or should I say Mr Adab: you said in your letter that Libyans are the most respectful to women, and I ask you since when? Do you hear yourself talking? All I can tell you is that Libyan women have been victims in Libya for a long long time, but that's an issue Libyans will not discuss, we hide our problems very well in Libya and we attack others for making the same mistakes. Think about it and recall the old days when you were home, what rights did your mother and sisters have? Did they have the same rights you and I had? NOT.

When you were out playing soccer and kicking the ball around, your sisters and mother were cooking and cleaning. We (men) grow up having all the freedom, going out enjoying ourselves, doing all the things that our sisters are forbidden to do, because of a society that does not recognize that women are human too, they want to go out and do the very same things that you and I do. Think about it my friend, Its a man's world, you can not deny it, we all grow up in the same society, the husband goes to work, comes home, finds his food on the table, he eats and then goes to sleep for couple of hours then somebody wakes him up to have his tea then he gets up and dress up and goes out to see his friends, what a life... and then every year he has to take a vacation by himself, well ... since he has been working hard all year he deserves a vacation, now his wife is left with two or three kids to take care of. Where is the justice? Tell me, and where is the respect for women. This is the routine in Libya, I have seen it and I am sure you have seen it too.

My friend, the problem in Libya is far more than just a political issue, it is fundamental; culture, education and lack of understanding for women issues. Women make half of our society and if we do not recognize that, we will lose the struggle. Islam has nothing to do with this, this is absolutely a cultural problem in our society and I do not want my kids to grow up in a society like this. Wa lil Hadeeth Baqiya.

Elsalam alaikum wa rahmet Allah

Khir Elrejal
